President / Founder

Hi! My name is Josie, and I am an incoming sophomore at the University of Southern California, pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences. I grew up in Lake Tapps, Washington, and I've always been drawn to a career in medicine. However, I am specifically passionate about dentistry because it uniquely blends everything I'm passionate about — science, artistic precision, creativity, and building genuine relationships through compassion.

Outside of school, I enjoy lots of very different things. I've played piano since I could walk, I loved playing competitive soccer my whole life, skiing, art, and most of all spending time with the people I love.

Marcus and Mickey inspired me to create my own program. I am building the California chapter from the ground up: recruiting a founding officer team, developing school partnerships across Los Angeles, and pursuing formal USC recognition — with the same mission that started it all.

"Every child deserves to grow up with a healthy smile — and the confidence that comes with it."

The founders who started it all.

Bright Start California exists because two high school students in Washington, Marcus and Michael Kang, decided to do something about the kids they saw missing school over untreated dental problems. What began as hand-assembled kits and translated flyers has grown into a movement now reaching thousands of families across the country.

Our California chapter carries their model forward — student-led, community-first, multilingual, and always free — into the schools around Los Angeles.

Founded by Marcus & Michael Kang in Washington.
